A Relief Quarry Manager provides essential support during staff absences. Discover how this role ensures smooth, compliant operations in your open pit operation.

As a fill-in or relief Quarry Manager, my role is to step in when the usual site QM is unavailable, whether due to leave or other unforeseen circumstances. One of the biggest concerns for mine operators is that operations will have to cease, or compliance will slip during such periods. This is where having a qualified and experienced relief quarry manager becomes critical.
My approach to relief management can be twofold: maintaining the smooth running of daily operations is my core function but it can also offer the opportunity of identifying operational improvements or highlighting other inefficiencies. Often, it’s during these relief periods that small inefficiencies come to light—things that may be missed in the routine of day-to-day management.
In addition, I prioritise safety and compliance. One of the first things I do when stepping onto a new site is to review regulatory compliance from an open pit perspective, ensuring all regulations are being followed. It’s this attention to detail that ensures there’s no disruption in production, and that safety remains at the forefront of operations, even in the regular Quarry Manager’s absence.
