Beating Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent condition among many older adults. It is a degenerative joint disease where the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Although it cannot be cured, osteoarthritis can be effectively managed, particularly through exercise, guided by the principle that "motion is potion."



Why Movement Matters

The saying "motion is potion" underscores the significant benefits of staying active when dealing with OA. Regular, gentle exercise boosts the production of synovial fluid, a natural joint lubricant, reducing stiffness and enhancing joint function. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and cycling are particularly beneficial. They strengthen muscles and improve endurance without placing excessive strain on the joints.

Building Strength is another key component of managing OA. By building the muscles surrounding the joints, you can provide extra support and stability, helping to reduce pain and prevent further damage. Simple resistance exercises using bands or light weights can be effective for maintaining muscle mass, which naturally declines with age.

Enhancing Flexibility including stretching, also plays a vital role. They help to increase range of motion, making it easier to perform daily activities and reducing the risk of injury. Even a few minutes of stretching each day can lead to noticeable improvements in stiffness and mobility.

Managing Weight for Joint Health

Carrying extra weight can put added stress on joints, particularly the knees, hips, and spine. Are you aware that maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for reducing joint pain and slowing the progression of OA. Even modest weight loss can alleviate pressure on the joints, making movement easier, less painful and eventually enjoyable and motivational.

Medication and Support

Pain management may include the use of medications nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but these are most effective when paired with regular exercise. Physical therapy and support groups can also provide tailored guidance and motivation to help you stay active.

The GLA:D® Program

GLA:D® is a Danish program introduced into Australia about 10 years ago and widely accepted as an excellent program designed to help reduce the effects of hip and knee osteoarthritis. The program is available through authorised Physiotherapists and after initial training can be continued by individuals as part of their everyday life. It is suitable for all individuals regardless of severity of OA or even if you don’t have existing symptoms. Simple to undertake with minimal initial cost and no ongoing costs the program focuses on flexibility and muscle strength. A couple of minutes a day can do wonders for the management of OA.
